This article explains what swimmer's ear is and how to easily cure it.

What is swimmer's ear?

Swimmer's ear is an infection of the ear due to an accumulation of fluids in the outer ear. Doctors usually recommend swimmer's ear drops, which can be quite painful to an infected ear. Here is something that works, is inexpensive and is very soothing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Confirm with your doctor that this is an outer ear infection or swimmer's ear. This will not work with inner ear infections.

  2. Step 2

Use blow dryer with a medium to cool setting.

  3. Step 3

Blow into ear canal for approximately 10 minutes per ear.

  4. Step 4

If the air is too diffused, you can tape a funnel onto the blow dryer. The small end of the funnel will be pointing away from the blow dryer. This will provided a smaller flow of air from the tip of the blow dryer.

  5. Step 5

This can be repeated several times a day to help dry the ear more thoroughly and to help ease ear pain.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not add drops to your ears. This only adds additional moisture to your ear, prolonging the infection and pain.
  • Consult your doctor first to confirm that the cause of the ear pain is swimmer's ear (an outer ear infection).
  • Do not use settings that are too warm on the blow dryer.
  • Do not overheat your blow dryer.
