Things You'll Need:
- $100-up
-
Step 1
The most important factor in selecting a fly rod for steelhead is the line weight. Go with a 7-8 weight rod. This will provide you with enough backbone to fight fish in current and will provide enough muscle to keep their heads pointed in the direction you want not what the fish wants.
-
Step 2
The second factor is rod length. Select a rod that is a minimum of 9 foot. 10 foot or longer is preferable. The longer the rod the more "noodle" action it has, therefore absorbing the shock and allowing for better control over the fish.
-
Step 3
The Third factor is actual weight of the rod. A rod that is too heavy will be miserable on a long fishing day. Try out the rod and make sure that you will be comfortable casting the rod for several hours or longer.
-
Step 4
The last recommendation is to choose a fly rod made from a reputable company. Orvis, St. Croix, and Sage just to name a few. Stay away from cheap rods. You might lose a fish of a lifetime because you have inadequate equipment.
