I am a business teacher who teaches computer classes to high school students. In this article, I will share how I teach computer classes and keep the class motivated. You will learn how to teach in class computer classes.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • desktop computers
  • lcd projector
  • laptop or tablet
  • laser light
  • internet access
  1. Step 1

Connect your laptop or tablet pc to a LCD projector (to reflect on your screen)

  2. Step 2

Turn on your laptop and LCD projector for your demonstrations

  3. Step 3

Have students turn on their computers while watching your demonstration screen.

  4. Step 4

Open the appropriate program (excel, word, publisher, etc.)

  5. Step 5

If you use textbooks, be sure that you everyone has a book, including YOU.

  6. Step 6

Read the question or sample, type as you read, explaining each step.

  7. Step 7

After you have your demonstration on the overhead, walk around the room to ensure that each student understands and have the correct information.

  8. Step 8

If a student is struggling, help them individually.

  9. Step 9

After you have walked around the room, ask the class as a whole if they have any questions about that step. (if they have questions or seem unsure, redo that demonstration)

  10. Step 10

When students are working and your demonstration is over, walk around the room and look at each student's work.

  11. Step 11

Keep the demonstration on the overhead throughout the entire assignment.

  12. Step 12

Save your demonstration to upload it on your website, school server, or any other neutral place for student access as needed.

  13. Step 13

If you do not have a website, email the steps and demonstration to parents or make paper copies for students who do not have access to internet from home.

  14. Step 14

At the end of the lesson, have students to type or write down the steps to your demonstration from memory in their notes.

  15. Step 15

Review the steps as students compare it to their notes. (This will determine if students comprehended your steps or missed something.)

  16. Step 16

Repeat this with all future assignments.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always have a back up just in case your computer network goes down (paper copies)
  • Create a website for your classes. This will allow students to have access to all notes, powerpoints, videos, etc of your class.
  • Record instructions to difficult assignments by using movie maker or powerpoint and save it to your website.
  • Always teach the class as if your students knows nothing about a computer (this will ensure that everyone understands even the slower learners)
  • Take down parent emails and keep them posted.
  • Make your students responsible for their learning by backing up assignments onto a flashdrive.
  • If you know of a student who is not grasping, place him/her next to a student who understands. Students learn better from one another.
  • It is easy for students to take other students' work by using flashdrives and other saving devices. Be sure to check my properties to determine where the work originated.
  • Parents may think their child is computer saavy because they have a "social network" like Facebook or Myspace.
  • Students may not type as fast as others. When this happens provide notes for that student.
