This article will describe how to accurately and safely check and change the air pressure in your tires.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tire Pressure Guage
  • Air tank and hose (either at home or at a service station)
  1. Step 1

On the outer wall of your tires, locate the print that states what the max pressure on the tire should be. This is the number that states what pressure the tires should be at.

  2. Step 2

Take the cap off the valve stem on the tire. This is the little stem that sticks out near the edge of the wheel.

  3. Step 3

Put the tire guage on and apply even and direct pressure until you get an accurate reading on the guage.

  4. Step 4

If the number on your guage matches the number on the tire, put the cap back on the valve stem, your all done! If not proceed to the next step.

  5. Step 5

If the number was lower then it should have been you need to add air. Use the air hose attached to the air tank and apply the same even and direct pressure. When you are doing it correctly you will be able to hear the air going in the tire, however make sure you have a tight seal. Air should not be leaking out around the air hose and the stem. Put air in for 5-10 seconds then repeat steps 3 and 4 and continue until number desired appears.

  6. Step 6

If the desired air pressure is too high, then you need to let some air out of the tires. To do this there should be a little nub on the back side of the tire pressure guage. Use this nub to press in on the needle inside the valve stem. You will be able to hear air escaping the tire. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to recheck tire, and continue until you get desired results.
