I was taught by an older lady how to start a rosebush from a clipping. I will teach you how to do this. It is very easy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Rose
  • Glass Jar
  • Small Shovel
  1. Step 1
    Find your rose
    Find your rose

Chose the rose that you want to make a new bush from but don't cut it yet.

  2. Step 2
    The 5th leaf
    The 5th leaf

You need to cut the rose at the 5th leaf. This means that you start at the flower and look at the leaves. You are looking for the first set of 5 leaves and you will cut it 2ish inches below this.

  3. Step 3

If you have extra leaves below the 5th leaf on your cutting, you can pluck these off to give yourself a nice stem.

  4. Step 4
    Digging your hole
    Digging your hole

Get your glass jar and fill it to the top with water. Dig a hole that the jar will fit it, allowing enough space for it to stick out of the ground about and inch or two.

  5. Step 5
    Pouring the water

Once your hole is dug, pour your water in the hole. Don't worry, it should look like a muddy mess.

  6. Step 6
    Rose in the hole

Place your rose in the hole, inserting the stem into the ground. Don't worry when you can't see your rose anymore.

  7. Step 7
    Your completed mini-greenhouse

Place your glass jar over the rose. Use the extra dirt to fill in any gaps around the jar. Take a handful of dirt and place it on top of the jar.

  8. Step 8

You just made a little greenhouse for your rose. Now you just leave it and forget it until next spring. Don't worry if your handful of dirt washes away throughout the year.

  9. Step 9

In the spring or early summer, after the fear of frost has past, lift the jar. You will see some new leaves forming at the bottom of your hole. You can clip off the dead flower.

  10. Step 10

Congratulations! You now have your very first rosebush that you started from a clipping.

  11. Step 11

If you DO NOT see tiny leaves, give the flower a GENTLE tug. If it is growing, you should not be able to move it. If it is dead and didn't take, your rose will pull out and look rotted. (I only had this happen to be once)

  12. Step 12

If you are sure it is not rotted, place your jar back over the rose and leave it. DO NOT WATER!

  13. Step 13

Give the rose more time to sprout. You can even wait until next spring if needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Roses cross breed very easily. You can mix colors to make new colors. Place your glass jar greenhouses close to each other and when they grow, you will have mixed colors. This is fun to do to see what colors you can get.
  • You are working with roses, be careful of the thorns. They bite.
