Fish for Trout with Spinner Lures

There are many ways to successfully catch brook and rainbow trout but using spinner lures is easy, fun and inexpensive for novice fishermen to begin.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing pole
  • 1/16 oz. spinner lure
  • net
  • fish stringer or basket
  • needle nose pliers (optional)
  1. Step 1
    Flourescent Orange Roostertail 1/16 oz.

First you have to choose a spinner lure to use. Bright colors such as pink or orange are usually the most effective. Mimicking the environment by choosing colors of the insects that are flying around is a good way to pick a lure too.

  2. Step 2

Tie your lure to your fishing line. You are ready to fish!

  3. Step 3
    Two trout in the creek.

Find a good spot to fish. Trout are hunters and scavengers so try to think where a food source typically would be for them. Some good spots include eddy pools or spots where the water swirls in a circle in moving water, around brush or weed beds. You might notice small sticks, twigs, or leaves near these spots.

  4. Step 4

Cast your lure and start reeling it back. The water resistance will make the spinner begin to spin. Changing the speed in which you reel your lure back will help draw more fish.

  5. Step 5

Once you get a bite you have to gently set the hook. A bite will feel like two small jerks of the fishing pole. Trout have very weak tissue on their mouths so if you pull really hard you may lose the fish. Simply pull your rod straight up until there is a nice bend in the tip.

  6. Step 6

Lastly, let the fish do the work. All you have to do is continue to reel and never let your rod drop downward. DON'T JERK YOUR ROD! Once the fish is close enough, grab it with a net and move away from the water if possible. Congratulations, you have successfully caught a trout!

Tips & Warnings
  • If fishing in a creek or river try fishing from downstream, this keeps the fish from seeing you since they are facing upstream.
  • Carry multiple colors of lures with you in case you wish to change colors to test for effectiveness.
  • Be careful not to cast directly into weeds or brush. The hook will snag and you may lose your lure.
  • Be careful when dealing with fishing gear. Hooks are sharp!
