How to get a squirrel to come to you

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nuts
  1. Step 1

This is for entertainment only, not to capture or try to turn a wild animal into a pet! How to Get A Squirrel To Come To You is fairly simple. You need patience, no loud noises or quick movements, as the squirrel needs to learn to trust you. You also need access to a squirrel, such as a park or your own yard would be best. A bag of nuts like walnuts, pecans, peanuts in shell.

  2. Step 2

First off when you see the squirrel, get your bag of nuts. Then you take one out and tap it on something to get his attention. If using peanuts you may have to use something else to tap with. Then toss the nut in his direction. When he goes for it wait until he finishes with that one. The squirrel may bury it or eat it right away. When he has finished that one, take another nut and tap it on something to get his attention and then toss it toward him, a little closer this time.
Wait until he has finished and repeat a few more times. Limit to 5 or 6 nuts each day as you don't want the squirrel to be totally dependent on you for food.

  3. Step 3

Repeat process each day at approximately same time drawing him closer to you each day. When you get him to within ten feet of you start talking softly to him so he gets used to you. Within a week he should be coming right up to you. I have had a squirrel actually come in the door a couple feet to retrieve nuts. Quite entertaining!

Tips & Warnings
  • Peanuts are ok, but walnuts, pecans and others are more entertaining as the squirrel has to figure out how to carry it.
  • Wild animals can bite. Even cute little squirrels.
