A farm animal theme can be an unusual and fun approach to a baby shower. If you've got enough space in your house, you can turn the whole place into a barn or a barnyard where the mom-to-be and her other friends can get out of the hustle and bustle of city life and step into the country for an afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Create the invitations. The easiest way to get exactly what you want is to use unfolded wedding-style white invitations from a discount or craft store and using your home printer for the text. Use a simple font, and be sure to throw in some farm animal puns where you can, such as "Don't be chicken, come to the party," or "It promises to be a moo-ving event." Include all necessary information, such as where and when the shower is being held, and where the mom is registered. Leave enough space at the centered top of the invitation to punch two small holes close together and tie a small fabric bow of red gingham ribbon.

2
Decorate with farm animal notions. Mylar balloons with farm animals often are available, or create animal shapes on your own to hang about the room. Hay bales for sitting are a nice touch.

Plan a central food table that will wow guests. For the farm theme, serve an unusual lunch. Make or buy shredded barbecue pulled pork or chicken to serve in a crock pot with cut dollar rolls. Make or buy fried chicken, and serve it in a large napkin-lined galvanized bucket with tongs. Serve coleslaw and potato wedges or corn-on-the-cob.

Use three napkin-lined mini galvanized buckets for spoons, forks and knives. Set out bandanna-patterned napkins and plates. Two large wheat bundles and scattered straw will complete your table. For an extra-special touch, make butterscotch haystack cookies and arrange in a heaping pile.

Make a cake-and-gift table if there's room. Use a white tablecloth and place your cupcake tower in the middle of the table. Add two large wheat bundles, mini hay bales, scattered straw, small cake plates and forks in a mini lined galvanized bucket. Small terracotta flower pots filled with regular or mini M&Ms are an adorable touch.

Set up a drink station on a cart, table or kitchen counter. Line a large, oblong galvanized tub with a trash bag and fill halfway with ice. Place assorted sodas in glass bottles inside, then cover with more ice. Don't forget to place a bottle opener near the tub. Serve both iced tea and lemonade in glass pitchers or decanters; be sure to have plenty of whole lemon slices and sugar cubes nearby. Arrange clean small or medium Mason jars on the drink station for your guests to use as glasses.

Think seeds for shower favors. Packets of seeds wrapped in cellophane or placed in medium terracotta flower pots make a great treat for guests to take with them. For game prizes, make larger flower gift "baskets" by filling large flowerpots with garden gloves, seeds and a small spade or rake.

Plan games, remembering that it is always nice if the game elements go to the mother-to-be in the end. Make a memory tray by taking a large cookie sheet and lining it with cloth bandannas. Place a variety of baby items on the tray, including small sizes of baby lotion, shampoo and bath wash. Look for onesies and hats with farm animals, rattles or teethers with farm designs, rubber ducks and stuffed farm animals. To play the game, show the guests the tray for about three minutes and then have them write down everything they remember. The person who remembers the most items wins a prize.
