Step 1
The best time of the year to reseed your lawn is weeks before winter starts and after the hot summer sun has gone away. You can also reseed a lawn in the spring time after the frost is cleared but need to be active in the spring to get the grass growing prior to the summer coming.
-
Step 2
If the season is right the first thing you need to do is prepare the area to reseed a lawn. This includes normal maintenance such as removing weeds, clearing out dead grass areas and any debris like leaves from the lawn.
-
Step 3
Once the lawn is prepared, take a rake and break up the soil to create grooves for the seeds to fall into.
-
Step 4
There are many types of grass seed so be sure you select the right type based on the type of grass you already have growing in your lawn. If you are only reseeding a lawn in spots, then you can use your hand and shake out the seeds in the patches of dirt you have prepared. If you are doing an entire lawn, you may want to get a seed spreader to help reseed the lawn.
-
Step 5
After the seed has been spread out, use the rake again to dig the seeds into the soil lightly. They do not need to be deep but you want them covered by the dirt.
-
Step 6
Be sure to begin watering your lawn twice a day for a few weeks and use fertilizer to give the grass an extra boost to grow.
