At one point, the floppy disk used to be the best way to transport data from one computer to another; however, with the onset of writable CDs and flash drives, floppy disks quickly became extinct. However, many computer users still have important information stored on floppy drives, and the only way to access the material on a computer, such as the eMachines W3644, is to purchase a floppy disk drive and install it on the computer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase an external floppy disk driver from either a local electronics store, or buy them online (see links in Resources). It is important to purchase an external drive because newer eMachines models will not have a place to install an internal floppy drive.

  2. Step 2

Attach the power cord to the back of the new floppy drive (the power insert will be located on the back end of the drive). Plug the other end into an available power outlet.

  3. Step 3

Plug the USB cable into the USB port on the back side of the floppy drive. All external floppy drives will be connected and installed to the eMachines through a USB cable. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the computer. In a few moments the computer will detect that a new piece of hardware has been installed.

  4. Step 4

Insert the driver installation CD into the computer's CD drive. The driver installation wizard will launch in a few moments. Follow the prompts to complete the setup, and the installation of the floppy drive into the eMachines W3644 computer will be finished.
