While some people love receiving a golden tan, others prefer not to tan. So how do you avoid tanning when going out, especially on vacations? There are preventative measures one can take to keep from tanning.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • SPF sunblock protection from UVB and UVA sun rays
  • Large rimmed hats
  • Protective clothing
  • Umbrellas
  1. Step 1

Shower directly before going outdoors and apply a sunblock from head to toe. Be sure to use a sunblock that protects against UVB and UVA rays and is at least 50 + SPF sunscreen.

  2. Step 2

Wear lightweight, loose, long sleeved shirts and long pants. If the material is a natural material like cotton, it will be cooler. Light colored items will also be cooler. The material will offer protection from the sun and help keep from tanning.

  3. Step 3

Wear wide rimmed hats that offer shade and sun protection to the face and neck. The larger the hat, the more the protection. This is why large straw hats are popular for the summer time.

  4. Step 4

To protect the hands from getting a tan, wear gloves. There are thinner gloves available but they are sometimes difficult to find.

  5. Step 5

Sit or stand under shade or under an umbrella. Shade trees are better when beside other trees. Umbrellas offer protected, but it is limited when on the beach or near water. The reflections of the sun from the sand and water lessens the protection from the sun.

  6. Step 6

If make-up is worn, use a foundation that has a high level of SPF sunscreen. This will help protect the face from tanning. It will also help prevent aging of the skin.
