Held each autumn since 1977, the Chicago marathon is one of the five World Marathon Majors and attracts 45,000 runners from around the world. With no qualifying time, elite and amateur marathoners participate. For spectators attending to support a runner or just enjoying the race, follow these steps for a smooth experience.

Instructions

1. Before the race, download the course map and spectator guide from chicagomarathon.com. This shows the course and public transportation so spectators know where to go and how to get there.

2. Pick three or four spots to view the race before it starts. These can be designated viewing areas or other points along the course. Pick spots near Chicago Transit Authority stops in order to move quickly from one site to another.

3. Move quickly between viewing points because crowds could be large at every point along the course. Find spots near passing runners.

4. Use public transportation to get to each viewing point. Traffic will be snarled by road closures because of the race.

5. Pick a specific location to meet runners after the race. It will take time for runners to get to the finish area. It could be difficult to locate them among the throngs of people.

Tips & Warnings

• Know your runner's starting time and pace so you can estimate when he will arrive at your viewing spots.

• Keep an eye out for participants near your runner, particularly those in distinctive attire. This can help you locate your runner.

• Hydrate throughout the day as you could do some running as you move from point to point.

• Avoid crossing the course for your safety and the safety of the runners.

• Don't be in a rush at the end. It will take awhile for runners to get out of the finish area.
