Authentic German Goulash is nothing like the American version with hamburger meat and noodles. I learned this recipe from a German chef by the name of Helga. You will love it!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stew Meat
  • Onions
  • Paprika
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Large Cooking Pot
  1. Step 1
    Brown Stew Meat

    Brown Stew Meat

You will need equal amounts of cubed stew meat and onions. How much depends on how much you need to serve. If you have 5 cups of cubed stew meat you will need 5 cups of chopped onions. I know it seems like a lot, but don't short it!

  2. Step 2

You will need to brown your stew meat in your large cooking pot. Leave meat and drippings in the pot. Add onions and cook on medium to high until onions start to get translucent

  3. Step 3

You will add 1/4 teaspoon of Paprika, Salt and Pepper for every cup of meat you use.

  4. Step 4

Stir well and cover. Lower heat to very low and let simmer for 4 hours or until onions are completely gone. Onions will break down into a gravy and you will no longer be able to see any part of them.

  5. Step 5

German Goulash is traditionally served over Spaetzle, which is a German Noodle. They are difficult to make. I serve my German Goulash over mashed potatoes. You can also cook egg noodles to serve with this dish. Bon Appetite!

Tips & Warnings
  • Check occasionally during cooking and stir. If meat seems like it is getting dry add a little water.
  • If you like a little spice add some red pepper powder.
  • Do not simmer in a crock pot! I have tried this before and my meat turns to mush. Meat will be tender but in firm chucks if cooked in a pot on the stove.

on 7/28/2009 It is fabulous. I learned to make it one weekend at a German Restaurant in Dallas. My husband and I were visiting his Aunt and Uncle who just bought the restaurant. All of the help walked out and we were stuck helping... I got to assist the cook... who barely spoke english. She was German... it was a hoot! And I learned how to make some great german food in the process
