Step 1
Determine whether the bathroom mostly will be a spa, a second bathroom near a lower-level family room or a bathroom for kids. This might affect your choice of color and materials as well as your budget.
-
Step 2
Measure the bathroom floor space. Write down the dimensions and refer to them as you shop and compare prices. Have a general idea of the colors you want for your bathroom tile.
-
Step 3
Visit home-improvement stores and look through their catalogs. Ask for samples you can place in your bathroom to see how they look in the light and alongside the bathroom curtains, wallpaper or vanity.
-
Step 4
Choose by price if necessary. Vinyl and ceramic tiles are the least-expensive. Ceramic tile is graded by hardness and is easy to clean. Vinyl won't last as long, is by far the cheapest and is easy to install. Engineered tile, which costs more, is made of marble and stone chips. Terrazzo is in the same price range as engineered tile and, as a mixture of marble chips and concrete, is durable. Most expensive is marble and glass. Glass tiles are waterproof and in some cases resemble the look of ceramic tile with the natural brilliant sheen of glass. Many tile manufacturers offer unique styles of recycled glass and recycled aluminum.

Step 5
Check for tile remnant sales. In addition to home-improvement stores, look for bathroom tiles at specialty stores or at discounttiledirect.com and other online retailers.
