How to Use Serial Cable

A serial cable is a computer connection cable used for transferring data between two devices. There are two types of serial cables---DE-9 (sometimes called DB-9) and DB-25. Not all computers have serial ports today because of the invention of the USB (Universal Serial Bus) port. Using a serial cable to connect two devices is as simple as plugging in the connectors and letting your computer recognize the connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what type of serial cable you will need for connecting another computer to yours or connecting a specific device to your computer---DE-9 (DB-9) or DB-25. Look at the serial port on your computer and count the pins, and then look at the serial port on the other device/computer and count the pins.

    • 2

Purchase the appropriate serial cable. If a converter is needed (to convert DE-9 to DB-25), purchase it along with the serial cable.

    • 3

Remove the packaging from the serial cable/converter and straighten out the cable to its full length.

    • 4

Ensure that your computer and the other computer/device are turned off. Connect the serial cable (and converter if you needed one) to your computer and then to the other computer/device. Tighten the screws on the connectors to ensure a good fit.

    • 5

Turn on the other device or computer first, then your computer. Let the computers/device recognize each other. You will be prompted to insert the driver software if you are connecting a device to your computer that uses a serial cable. If you are connecting your computer to another computer and using the serial cable as a null modem, run a data transfer program like HyperTerminal or another communication program.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most PCs and Macs have a communication built into their operating system so you can use a serial cable to connect two computers and transfer data. Check online or your local computer store to get the best price on serial cables and converters.
