    CHAIN STITCH:

After tying a knot the chain stitch (ch) is the first thing you'll need to know how to do.
If you are right handed, hold the hook in you right hand and loop the yarn over your left index finger. Hold the knot between the thumb and ring finger of your left hand. Take the hook and wrap the yarn from back to front around the shaft. Draw the yarn through the loop on the hook, Congratulations your first chain stitch is made. The pattern you use will tell you how many chain stitches to make. Don't count the starting knot as one of the stitches.
We'll chain four and slip stitch together.

  2. Step 2
    Slip Stitch

    SLIP STITCH (SL ST):

You are going to connect the ends together to form a circle. Take your hook and put it through the first chain stitch. Holding yarn firmly draw your hook all the way through the two stitches to form a circle.

  3. Step 3
    Single Crochet

    SINGLE CROCHET (SC):

Insert hook from front to back in the center of the second chain from the hook, there are now 2 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn from back to front around the hook, this is called yarn over (YO), draw the yarn through both loops on the hook.
Congratulations your first single crochet stitch is made. Follow this same pattern until your row is complete.

  4. Step 4
    Double Crochet

    DOUBLE CROCHET (DC):

Yarn over hook once, insert hook from front to back in the center of the chain. Yarn over, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook leaving 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook. Congratulations your first double crochet is now made.

on 10/17/2009 My Aunt passed away leaving a whole closet from ceiling to floor o crochet threads/yarn and other craft supplies. I am desperately trying to learn how to do this. I have 6 industrial bags of yarn and all this stuff to work with. I thank you for your post and I do hope I can get it going. I have mastered the chain stitch years ago when my husband showed it to me as just messing around. Now I need to get to next level with going back over it to make something other than a simple line of stitch..LOl. It would be great if there was a video of someone doing it that would really help out. I thank you for your time and posting.
