Most every household can admit to having a junk drawer. It’s easy to end up with a junk drawer because there will always be those orphaned items that don’t seem to have a place they can call home. There is a way to put an end to the notorious junk drawer and find homes for those odds and ends that seem to want to stand alone. Follow the next steps to help empty your junk drawer and replace it with something more useful.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Empty the junk drawer entirely and spread everything out on a large table. Use small pieces of paper with labels and put them in a designated space on the table so you can place the items in the right categories. Keep a trash can near the table so you can easily toss those items you will never use or have used in the past year.

  2. Step 2

Organize your items into areas where you already have places for such as writing utensils, scissors, and tape. These items would be labeled as office supplies and you can place them in your desk instead of a junk drawer.

  3. Step 3

Throw out anything that is broken, a duplicate, or incomplete with parts missing.

  4. Step 4

If you must keep a junk drawer because of items you just can’t find homes for, organize it in away that doesn’t cause you to dig around trying to find something. Use small containers and dividers to put items inside. You can get creative by using small decorative gift boxes, tea cups, or empty jam glass jars for the smallest of knick knacks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Junk drawers need maintenance, so go through them every month to make sure they’re still organized.
