How to play the game UNO

UNO is a card game for two to 10 players, ages 7 and older. The object of the game is to be the first person to score 500 points. Points are given for getting rid of all the cards in your hand. You can also score points for the cards left in your opponents' hands. The deck has 108 cards in two basic categories: Number cards and Action Cards. Number cards come in four colors, red, yellow, blue and green, and have a number from 0 to 9 printed on them. Action Cards change the game play. These include the Draw Two Card, Reverse Card, Skip Card, Wild Card and Wild Draw Four Card.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the cards out of the box and shuffle them. Then each player picks a card. The player with the highest number is the dealer. For this example, the game will include four players.

    • 2

Deal seven cards to each player, beginning with the player on the dealer's left.

    • 3

Place the remaining cards in the middle of the table. The dealer then turns over the top card to create the discard pile. If one of the Action Cards is turned over, then the rules for that particular card apply. However, if the Wild Draw Four Card is turned over, the card is returned to the middle of the deck and another card is drawn to begin the discard pile.

    • 4

Take turns starting with the player to the dealer's left. You must match either the color or number of the top card on the discard pile.

    • 5

Draw a card from the deck if you don't have a matching card. If you can play the newly drawn card, do so. Otherwise, play continues to the next player. A player can also lay down an Action Card from his or her hand. An Action Card has to match the color of the card on top of the discard pile except the Wild Card and the Wild Draw Four Card. These can be played at any time. The next player has to take up the action required by the Action Card.

    • 6

Announce a color change when a Wild Card is played. A player can play a Wild Card at any time. A Wild Draw Four Card can only be played if the player does not have any cards in his or her hand that match the color of the card on the discard pile. If a Wild Draw Four Card is played, the next player must draw four cards and also misses his or her turn.

    • 7

Shout, "Uno!" when you only have one card left in your hand. If you don't shout, "Uno!" and another player sees you only have one card, he or she can shout, "Uno!" If this happens, you must draw two cards from the deck.

    • 8

Tally the points remaining in the other player's hands when the first person plays his or her last card. Number cards are their face value. Draw Two, Skip and Reverse Action Cards count as 20 points. Both types of Wild Cards count as 50 points. These points are given to the person who plays all his or her cards first.

    • 9

Reshuffle the deck and play begins again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reverse Cards reverse the direction of the game play. Play usually moves clockwise beginning with the dealer. If a Reverse Card is played, the play shifts to counter-clockwise.

  • When a Skip Card is played, the player next to the person who put down the Skip Card loses his or her turn.

  • When a Draw Two card is played, the player next to the person who put down this card must draw two cards from the deck and also loses his or her turn.

  • A Wild Card allows the player who puts it down to change the color of the suit being played. For example, from green to yellow. It is useful to play this card if you have a lot of one color in your hand.

  • A Wild Draw Four Card can only be played if you don't have any other cards in your hand that can be played. When this card is played, the person whose turn it is next must draw four cards and lose his or her turn. If any of the players think you have played the Wild Draw Four Card unfairly, you can be challenged. If this happens, you have to show your cards to the other player. If you played it unfairly, you have to draw four cards. If it was played fairly, the person who challenged you has to draw four cards.

  • An alternative scoring method is to give the points left in each person's hand at the end of the game to those people. Then the person with the lowest number of points is the winner, rather than the person who reaches 500 points first.
