A natural self-test called the Phalen's Test that you can do on your own to determine if you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

First of all, what is CTS? Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by overuse of the finger flexors which compresses the median nerve at the carpal tunnel area of the hand and prevents normal oxygen flow and circulation to the hand. People who type or write a lot, use a gripping motion such as baristas or mechanics, as well as incorrect body mechanics or overuse during massage therapy may tend to develop CTS.

The following test may give you a better idea of the possibility of CTS:

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Sitting, or standing- have hands upside down at chest level at a 90 degree angle.

  2. Step 2

    Turn your hands so that the backs are facing each other.

  3. Step 3

    Press the backs of your hands against each other, keeping your arms at a 90 degree angle.

  4. Step 4

    Hold this position for 1 minute. If you feel a tingling sensation or numbness in the thumb, index finger, or middle finger, this is usually an indication of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Tips & Warnings
  • Please know that surgery is not always the answer for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Various exercises as well as massage can decrease the symptoms, as it is caused mainly by muscle overuse in the wrist/hand which tends to impinge the median nerve in the carpal tunnel area.
  • This test is a documented test but does not guarantee 100% accurate results. Once you have completed the test and detect the possibility of CTS, it is best to see your physician for further diagnosis.
