How to Work as a Mystery Shopper

Shopping is something we all have to do whether we like to or not. There are companies that hire mystery shoppers to help improve customer service. As a mystery shopper, you are an independent contractor. You can select the jobs you would like to complete and set your own hours. You may not get rich or make enough to pay a bill but you will make some pocket change while doing something you have to do anyway and you'll be helping to improve customer service.

      Register with companies that offer mystery shopping such as Gap Buster or Corporate Research International. Find other companies that offer mystery shopping at Volition. Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA) has a job listing from many different companies, which can be searched for by state.

      Visit the job boards of companies once you have been accepted, select the state you would like to find work in, then select the job you would like to complete. Information such as requirements and pay are provided as well as the dates in which the job must be completed.

      Select to complete the job. If you are eligible to self-assign the job, it will be added to your to do list. If you are not eligible for self-assignment, your request to complete the job will be submitted.

      Read over the instructions and print out paperwork.

      Go to the location and complete the job per the instructions.

      Use a printer to scan in any applicable receipts and or business cards, go to the website and enter the report.

Tips & Warnings

  • Occasionally a company will pay extra to have a shop completed if it isn't in your immediate area and they don't have anyone to complete it. Inquire with your scheduler if you are able to complete a job but need extra pay to compensate you for the distance.

  • Most companies require reports to be input 12 to 24 hours after a shop is completed or by 11 p.m. or midnight the same day a shop is completed.
