How to Letterpress

Typography produced by a printing press

Publishing has evolved far beyond Johannes Gutenberg's printing press, but the art of the letterpress is still alive and well, particularly among printing and typography enthusiasts. While a letterpress grants its owner the freedom to publish, it is more often used for more artistic purposes, and is not a practical means of printing compared to modern opportunities.

Instructions

    • 1

Place each metal letter or symbol you want to use onto your composing stone. Remember to arrange them backward so they print properly on the paper.

    • 2

Add ink to the letterpress and press the composing stone onto test paper. Allow time for the stone to imprint the paper and set the ink, then remove it.

    • 3

Make adjustments to your stone based on the paper production. You may need to create space between lines or letters, replace metal lettering that is chipped or defective, or change the sizes of some or all of the type.

    • 4

Continue experimenting with the arrangements on the composing stone until you are satisfied with the product. Insert your stationery or paper onto the stone and begin producing copies of your letterpressed publications.

Tips & Warnings
