Things You'll Need:
- Feather dusters, or natural sponges.
- paint
- paint tray
- practice paper
- scissors
-
Step 1
• Faux finishes can cost thousands of dollars and are found in many upscale homes. An alternative is to add a little color with faux finishes using feather dusters or natural sponges. Faux finishes can cover one wall or an entire room.
-
Step 2
To get the results that you desire, you need to practice on a brown paper bag, cardboard or any type of neutral surface.
-
Step 3
• Feather dusters are best used by cutting the feather duster in half. Depending on the area to be covered, 3-4 feather dusters should be adequate.
-
Step 4
• Natural sponges are good choices for small surfaces such as a plaster column or a small piece of furniture.
-
Step 5
• Use only a small amount of paint poured into a paint tray. Patterns can quickly be seen on a practice surface. Dip the duster first and remove excess paint on a newspaper.
-
Step 6
• Corners and areas next to the ceilings should be completed last. Take a used or new feather duster and cut all feathers off except for a small portion of the duster that contains 6-8 feathers.
-
Step 7
• Slowly and carefully move around the room filling in the spaces to match the pattern. This technique will work in corners also. If the ceiling and corner areas are not completed the effects are amateurish.
-
Step 8
• Use an existing color palette that works to contrast or complement. Many paint stores have great color specialists, but don’t be afraid to experiment with color.
