Learn how to breast feed your new baby with success. It is not as hard as you would think.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patients
  • Baby
  1. Step 1

Sit some where quiet and relaxing. Pour yourself a nice drink and make sure you have the tv remote next to you. There is nothing worse than having your baby latched to your breast and having to move.

  2. Step 2

Lift your shirt and release bra hook. Make sure your baby is totally awake, there is nothing that will put a sleepy back to sleep quicker than putting him or her to your breast. If you need to you can take off the diaper for a few minutes, play with the baby's feet, do what you need to do to wake them up.

  3. Step 3

Put fingers of opposite hand under breast you will be putting baby to, with thumb on top. This will allow you to keep the baby's nose clear from your breast so they can breath easily, once you become a pro you may be able to just put one finger between your breast and baby's nose.

  4. Step 4

Put hungry baby to breast, baby's mouth needs to cover the whole brown area (areola) around the breast. I f the baby grabs just the nipple, you will know it. It will hurt, Not just be Sore, Hurt. If this happens put one finger between breast and baby's mouth to break suction and try again. It is very important for the milk production that the baby has as much of your breast as possible in his mouth. It may feel weird, or a little uncomfortable for a few days but once you get the hang of it, There is nothing in this world like it. Breast feeding should be relaxing and will become second nature to you if you give it a chance. Remeber, your milk is produced on a supply and demand basis, so the more you put your baby to your breast the more milk you will have. Breast fed babies need to eat about every 2 hours. You start counting that 2 hours from the time you start feeding the baby. So if you start feeding your baby at 2:00 and he nurses on each side for 10 minutes and you burp him in between so you do not stop feeding him until 2:30, do not be surprised if he wants to eat again at 4:00. You do not want to supplement the feedings for at least a couple of months after your milk supply is established.
