How to Compare Comcast, DirecTV & Dish Network
Choosing a television service provider can be a confusing process in today's digital age. Cable and satellite companies all promise the best features, service and prices, and with so many available options, including hundreds of channels in different packages, HD, on demand viewing and digital video recorders (DVRs), it can be hard to know what best suits the needs of you and your family. The key is to discover which factors are most important and whether Comcast (or your local cable provider) or one of the two main satellite providers--DirecTV and Dish Network--best fits your budget and viewing habits.

Choosing a TV Provider
-
1
Determine your top priority for what you want in a TV service provider. Is it price, access to local channels, number of HD channels, service or any combination of those and other factors? How much can you budget each month to spend for TV service?
-
2
The most efficient way to compare cable and satellite TV providers is to go to their websites. Comcast, DirecTV and Dish Network have comprehensive descriptions and lists of products, programming packages and features available, as well as current specials and promotions.
-
-
3
Find out if the service is available in your area. DirecTV and Dish Network should be offered nationally; Comcast is only available in certain areas. If Comcast doesn't serve your city or town, use this same process to see if your local cable provider will be your best option.
-
4
Browse the providers' websites to see which ones offer the channels and/or features you want most, and for the best price. How many and which channels do they offer in HD if you have an HDTV? How many premium channels and channels within each premium channel's bundle (HBO, Showtime, etc.) do they have?
-
5
Look for what kind of fees and costs may also be included with the monthly rates--how much will installation cost? How much per month is a DVR or more than one? What period of time do they require for a commitment and what would be the penalty to cancel service before then? What is the monthly rate for premium channels after any introductory specials expire?
-
6
Call the provider's toll-free number to speak to a customer service representative before ordering. Find out if the online prices and specials are current and available in your area, how long the wait for installation is and any other questions you may have. If you prefer one provider but another has lower rates, ask if they will meet or beat those rates to earn your business.

Tips & Warnings
TV and telephone companies sometimes offer a discount for TV service when bundled with phone and Internet service as well--inquire about this if you have the need for all three.
