The spark plug wires on your Ford Contour are responsible for making sure that an electrical spark is delivered to the combustion chamber from the distributor. Without plug wires, your engine will not fire. You should check your Contour's spark plug wires every 60,000 miles with your spark plugs, or any time you are having idle or spark problems while driving.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New spark plug wires
  1. Step 1

Change one spark plug wire at a time. Starting from the right side of your engine, pull the spark plug wire off from the top of the engine. The plug wires will look like thick blue or black (depending on the year of your vehicle and whether the plugs have been replaced before) wires with a plastic sheathing around them. There are two ends to the plug; one fits over the distributor on the engine block and the other fits over the spark plug down inside the engine. The wires themselves are located on the top of the engine. To remove the plug at the valve cover, grab the plug itself and gently wiggle it back and forth. It should pull off without too much trouble.

  2. Step 2

Follow the plug wire to find where it is connected at the distributor end.

  3. Step 3

Pull the spark plug wire off the distributor and note the orientation of the plug wire. The plug wire is removed in the same manner as noted in step 1. Grab the plug and pull it off the distributor.

  4. Step 4

Place the short plug connector end over the distributor and the long plug connector end down into the engine until you feel it slide over the top of the spark plug. The plugs slide over the contacts on the distributor and the spark plug. There are no other retaining screws, bolts, or brackets for the plugs.
