Step 1
Each pharmacy maintains its own list of generic drugs for its own discount program. One pharmacy may offer a generic drug at a lower cost, while another pharmacy does not. Ask your pharmacy for a list of the generic drugs that apply to its discount program. If the generic drug is on your pharmacy’s discount drug list, you’ll get the generic drug at the lower cost.
-
Step 2
You’ll pay even less than your insurance card copay if the generic drug is on your pharmacy’s discount list. For example, if your copay for generics with your insurance card is $20, but your pharmacy charges $5 for generic drugs, you’ll pay $5. You will pay the discounted generic drug price OR your copay, whichever is less.
-
Step 3
Simply ask your doctor if a generic form of the drug you’re taking can be used to treat your condition. If a generic version is available and your doctor agrees that a generic would be okay to take, ask your doctor for a prescription for the generic version of that drug. Next time you fill your prescription, bring the new prescription to the pharmacy and you will notice the cost savings immediately.
