Did you know that 23% of all deaths in the United States are a direct result of some form of cancer? That's more than a little scary. What's worse is that many of those deaths could have been prevented through proper nutrition. Eating healthy and trusting the foods you eat has never been so important. With a little work you can produce a bountiful harvest of cancer fighting fruits and vegetables no matter where you live.

Things You'll Need:

  • Garden space of any size or a selection of containers
  • Garden soil
  • Selected fruit/vegetable seeds or seedlings
  • The desire to live a full and healthy life!
  1. Step 1
     

    It doesn't matter where you live or what kind of shape you're in. Everyone can have a garden full of delicious, nutritious, fruits and vegetables eaten specifically for their cancer fighting properties. City dwellers and people with physical disabilities may want to try container gardening. All you need is a sunny window. Can't get down on your knees to care for a garden? Try raised beds. Even if all you have is a five-by-five piece of ground your harvest can be amazing. Think of all the money you'll save. Four tomatoes can easily cost $2.00. Four tomato plants can yield twenty times that amount! That's a savings of $40.00! The effect those tomatoes could have on your health, however, is priceless.

    Here is a list of vegetables known to have the highest concentrations of anti-cancer properties: carrots, celery, cilantro, parsley, parsnip, garlic, cabbage, and soy.

    Here are some cancer fighting foods with moderate benefits: tomatoes, spinach, onions, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower.

    Some fruits with cancer fighting benefits: apples, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, and watermelon. If you're lucky enough to live in a warm climate you can plant citrus trees, avocado trees, and mango trees.

    They are all well known for their healthful benefits. And they are all relatively easy to grow either in a garden or containers.

  3. Step 3

    Some of these foods contain flavinoids that either act as antioxidants or help to stimulate the body' s absorption of vitamin C. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables also helps repair the damage done to the body' s cells by environmental factors like pollution and pesticides. Many of them also stimulate certain enzymes that combat the growth of cancer cells. The vitamin E contained in certain fruits and vegetables is known to have benefits especially for breast cancer and prostate cancer. Another benefit is the extra dietary fiber these foods provide. Fiber helps cleanse the colon and keep it free from disease and cancer causing bacteria and parasites. Let's also not forget the fact that most of these foods are part of a heart healthy diet as well.

  4. Step 4

    Growing these fruits and vegetables yourself guarantees they will be pesticide free. Pesticides have been linked to such things as Wilms tumor, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, retinoblastoma or cancer of the eye, and neuroblastoma or brain cancer, especially in children. Wouldn't it be nice to know that the next handful of carrots sticks you give your little one will definitely not be contributing to anything as horrible as a cancer?

  5. Step 5

    Your family will appreciate and enjoy the fresh, delicious produce. So use your green thumb to give them the best gift they could ever get. The gift of life!
