Having a house rabbit as a pet is definitely enjoyable, especially when he or she uses the litterbox consistently. Here is a great way to reach the point where you don't have to worry about your rabbit leaving presents for you all over the house.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rabbit
  • Litterbox, preferably with tall sides
  • Litter or hay

    Own a rabbit or rabbits.

  2. Step 2

You will probably notice where your rabbit likes to do business pretty quickly since they do make lots and lots of pellets. In these areas, place a shallow litter box, such as a cat litter box, cheap baking pans or cardboard trays. At first, you may want to leave them empty unless your rabbit is already using litter or using hay as his preferred bathroom spot.

  3. Step 3

Keep the rest of the rabbit's area clean, so there is only waste in the litter boxes. Generally, the rabbit will prefer one litter pan over the other, so you can begin removing extra litter boxes as they become less frequented.

  4. Step 4

Once the rabbit has chosen a preferred area or if the area becomes messy, put the cover on the litter box or place it inside a larger plastic tub with tall sides (as pictured, special, I know, but you can see it works). I recommend the latter so you can easily clean the pan and catch any stray sprays.

  5. Step 5

Put litter or hay in the box, whichever the rabbit prefers. For easy clean up, line the pan with a sheet of newspaper. Change the litter box frequently, so the rabbit doesn't find a clean area to use and frequent cleanings mean less time spent cleaning.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spaying or neutering your rabbit helps prevent marking of territory (and rabbit babies).
  • Rabbit urine is easier to clean off glass pans as compared to plastic or metal pans.
  • This is not fool proof, especially if you have a rabbit that likes to mark his or her territory with pellets.
