Step 1
Be Prepared
Define what you are trying to accomplish by networking and what information you need to do so. Know yourself (education, skills, experience) and prepare a short one minute presentation so that people will know you and what you are looking for. -
Step 2
Be Targeted
Identify your network and attend meetings and gatherings in your field of interest. Putting yourself out there and getting involved is the best way to meet people that may be able to help you in your career. -
Step 3
Be Professional
You should ask your networking prospects for advice instead of asking for a job. Focus on asking one thing at a time that is relevant to your area of interest. The information that you can gain by doing this can lead to more opportunities. -
Step 4
Focus on Quality, Not Quantity
A few meaningful conversations are much better multiple quick ones. Meaningful conversations will get you remembered much more than just handing out your card or resume. -
Step 5
Look For Referrals
The person you are talking to may not have any job openings but they may know of jobs open elsewhere. Be sure to inquire about those opportunities and use that person as a reference. -
Step 6
Stay Proactive
Stay organized by keeping a list of your contacts. Update this list any time someone gives you a lead. Send emails to thank people for their advice or referrals. Ask if you can follow up with a phone call.
