Step 1
As odd as it sounds, first you have to identify what caused the clog. If it’s something natural and organic you’re in the clear. If you’re child has dropped a small toy in the toilet, or something plastic you will probably want to try another method at rectifying the situation.
-
Step 2
Begin with a heavy duty plunger. The small cheap suction plungers often aren’t enough to get the job done properly and your toilet clog might require something a little heavier in the future.
-
Step 3
Once you have your weapon of choice, you’re ready to begin unclogging. Insert the plunger into your toilet and press down forcefully but slowly. (Press slowly because the last thing you want is for some of that gross dirty water to shoot back up out of the toilet—it’s best to take it slow at first).
-
Step 4
If you’re plunger doesn’t seem to be getting the job done, add some water to the toilet bowl. Water in the toilet bowl will give the plunger more suction power.
-
Step 5
If you can’t get the clog down by pushing alone, begin to sharply pull upwards. Your goal here is to dislodge whatever it is that may be causing the clog, loosen it up and free your toilet.
-
Step 6
You might have to try to unclog your toilet three or four times. Don’t give up if you have to fill the toilet with water a few times, in the end you will be saving yourself a lot of money and embarrassment by not calling a professional!
