How to Create a Study Plan for a Math Test

How to Create a Study Plan for a Math Testthumbnail
Studying regularly increases the likelihood of good test grades.

Making a study guide for an upcoming math test allows you to pace your review and study sessions realistically. The study plan helps you identify key areas you need to study and prioritize your time accordingly. The plan will also serve to remind you to bring home needed materials, since you will know in advance what you're studying each night. Following the study plan will ensure you are fully prepared when test day rolls around and preclude the need for a frenzied cram session or all-nighter right before the test.

Determine what material will be covered on the test at least one week in advance. Gather your class notes, previous work and earlier tests relevant to the material being covered. Request extra worksheets or practice problems from the math teacher. Find out what materials you will need to bring on the day of the test; note them on a checklist to be used the night before the test.

Divide the material to be reviewed over the number of days remaining before the test. Allow extra study time for any concepts or topics with which you have struggled. Set aside a quiet, well-lit study area away from distractions such as the television or telephone.

      • 3

Make flash cards of any key formulas, concepts or definitions. Plan to study these every other day until the test, with a final check the night before the test, to make sure you know them thoroughly.

Schedule review time and one to two sets of practice problems for each of the nights leading up to the test. Set aside time for a preliminary overall review at least three to four nights in advance of the math test. This allows you sufficient time to ask questions of your teacher if something is unclear.

Schedule a final review of all the material the night before the test. Plan enough time for a good night's sleep that night. Review your checklist and ensure you have all required materials for the test.
