out on the open road!

Many people think that taking a road trip is too expensive or uncomfortable, this how-to will show you how to get the most out of your mileage and your money.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A vehicle
  • Friends
  • Money
  • Food stuffs
  • Tents/camping gear
  1. Step 1

Pick your destination. Things to keep in mind:
    - Distance (the further away the more gas you use)
    - Decide who is coming with you.
    - Proximity to friends and family along the way (have everyone brainstorm about people for you to stay with along your travels, this will save you money and give you a chance to see people you rarely see otherwise).
    - Decide what sights you want to see along the way. (museums, monuments, mountains, zoos, or maybe the biggest ball of twine!)

  2. Step 2

Decide on a budget for each day of the trip. If you are going to stay with family and friends most of your trip this will cut down majorly on expenses. Also, make sure to bring camping supplies in case you don't have a place to stay you can always look up a KOA campground (or state park) nearby. Make sure to include gas, food, possible camping fees, and souvenirs in your budget.

  3. Step 3

Get on the road! Once you're on the road there is no turning back. Make sure to have your mechanic (or a really handy friend) look over your car before you leave. You don't want to get 1000 miles from home and have your car poop out on you.

  4. Step 4

Send postcards. Get addresses from your family and friends before you leave so that you can send postcards from interesting stops on your trip. No one sends postcards anymore so it's exciting for your recipients when they receive them and gives you a chance to reflect on your trip.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pack light.
  • The more people you bring, the cheaper it is.
  • Have picnics! You can save money by buying food at grocery stores and eating in parks.
  • Don't be afraid to make detours to see exciting and unknown things!
  • Check your tire pressure and fluid levels regularly on the trip. (if you don't know how, ask a friend to show you before you leave)
