So it's time for an accurate measurement. If the measurement is off by even a few fractions of an inch, you can be in for a world of trouble. Learn how to properly read a tape measure and save yourself the trouble! Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by drawing out the tape measure. Stretch it to the full length you need, making sure to hook the edge on of the tape measure onto the edge of whatever it is you are measuring.

    • 2

Make sure the tape measurer is straight and has no kinks in it. Lining up the edges, and making sure the measure is straight is half the work needed for your proper (and accurate) measurement.

    • 3

Once you have the tape measure in place, you're ready to make a reading. Go to the edge of the object you wish to measure, and go to the last bold number. The bold numbers will tell you how many feet you have measured (or meters if outside the US).

    • 4

Now you just need to count the inches. Remember, there are twelve inches per foot, and so in between each bold number there should be twelve tick marks.

    • 5

All you need to do is go back to the number of feet you have, and then count each extra inch you have measured. Keep it as a fraction to make things simple, so start with 1/12, then 2/12 (or 1/6), 3/12 (or ¼) etc.

    • 6

Once you have successfully measured the object, write it down, you don't want to forget! If you're making an important investment or purchase, consider measuring several different time to make sure you get the same reading each time.
