Step 1
Ask people that know you personally and can write a professionally-written letter. Even if someone has good things to say about you, it won't matter if their letter is poorly written and full of errors.

Decide who would be great at writing a reference letter about your work ethic. A superior at work who would be able to articulate many good things about you is best.

Request that the people you have chosen mention your good qualities. Suggest specific things such as strong character, good work ethic, etc.

If you play sports, include a teammate or coach. What a great addition to your letters! Think of things such as team player, dependable and good sportsmanship.

Give the people you have asked at least 10-14 days to complete the letter. Don't make it a rush.
You can ask if they need a sample or template of a letter of reference. If they do, print one off of the internet and give it to them in plenty of time. -
Step 6
Be up front and let them know what you are looking for. Don't tell them what to write word-for-word. Just give them ideas and let them know what message you are trying to convey.

Send thank-you notes once the letters have been written for you. You never know when you might need one again. Besides, it is just the right thing to do.
If they ask you for a letter of reference in the future, accept. Write them the best letter you can.
