Cat walking on a leash
Cat walking on a leash

With this guide, you will learn how to teach your cat how to walk on a leash.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cat Harness
  • Retractable Leash
  1. Step 1

Place the harness and leash in area where the cat likes to go.

  2. Step 2

After a few days of moving it to different areas that he goes, place the harness on your cat. (Adjust if needed).

  3. Step 3

Leave it on him for a few minutes while you pay attention to him. This could be done with treats, toys or just petting him.

  4. Step 4

Remove the harness. Do this for a few days, without attaching the leash.

  5. Step 5

Once he is used to the harness, attach the leash to the harness before you put it on him then put the harness on with the leash attached. Again, paying attention to him with treats, toys or petting.

  6. Step 6

Remove the harness and leash after a few minutes.

  7. Step 7

After he is used to the harness and leash, set him on the floor and let him wander around while you hold the leash.

  8. Step 8

Remove the harness and leash after a few minutes.

  9. Step 9

Once he is used to the harness with the leash, take him outside.

  10. Step 10

Let him wander wherever he wants (as long as it is safe), while you follow him around.

  11. Step 11

After a few days of him wandering around outside with you following, try to get him to go where you want.

  12. Step 12

Give the leash a little tug in the direction you want him to walk. Say, "Walk" each time you tug the leash gently.

  13. Step 13

Soon when you say, "Walk", he will know that you want him to go in your direction and he will walk with you. Don't forget to say "No" if he goes somewhere he shouldn't and give him a gentle tug as you say "Walk".

  14. Step 14

Make sure you offer him lots of praise when he does walk in the correct direction.

Tips & Warnings
  • I use a retractable leash. There is a button to stop him if he goes where he shouldn't and it gives him the ability to wander around while you stand still.
  • Offer him lots and lots of praise as he is getting used to it.
