Confused about the different blood sugar support supplements on the market for diabetes and hypoglycemia? Should you choose cinnamon or ginseng? Banaba or magnesium? This how-to will tell you how to pick one that actually works!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a blood sugar support supplement that has ginseng or fenugreek in it--they are the only two supplements proven to help with blood sugar control in research conducted in a peer-reviewed, academic setting.

  2. Step 2

DO NOT pick a supplement that has bitter melon in it without your doctor's advice. It can cause hypoglycemia in some patients--which can be dangerous for both hypoglycemics and diabetics!

  3. Step 3

Don't pick a supplement with any of the following--nothing is known about what dosage is effective or what the side effects are: alpha lipoic acid, banaba leaf extract, and vanadium.

  4. Step 4

Cayenne is a "filler" and has never been shown in a trial to actually assist with blood sugar support. The same can be said for chromium, gymnema sylvestre, magnesium and guggul.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't believe the claims that a certain supplement worked in a "clinical" trial. Anyone can make that claim--it means nothing because support supplements are not controlled by the FDA. Manufacturers can make any claim they like!
  • Take your doctor's advice. Some supplements (like magnesium) can cause serious problems if you take too much, and other ingredients with hypoglycemic effects could be very dangerous for those susceptible to hypoglycemia.
