Does your hamster bite or hiss at you when you try to hold it? Here are some tips to get your hamster to get used to being held without biting.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a hamster
  • toilet paper rolls
  1. Step 1

First and foremost wash your hands before going to pick up your hamster. If you hands smell like food, your hamster (who has poor eyesight) might mistake your fingers for food!

  2. Step 2

Hamsters do not like hands coming at them from above. If you put your hand close to the bottom of the cage, they are more apt to be less intimidated by you

  3. Step 3

If this doesn't work, try a toilet paper roll. Have the hamster run into the roll and hold both ends. This way you are technically holding the hamster but giving her the safety of the roll. After awhile she may very well decide to come out and see what is going on. Again, put your hand under the paper roll and don't grab at her from above.

  4. Step 4

Surprising as it might be, hamsters like treats too. They make hamster treats just like dog or cat treats. They may become your very best friend if you offer them a yogurt treat.

  5. Step 5

Go slow and take your time. Come at the hamster cage slowly. Offer your hand for her to smell any time you happen to be near the cage.
