How to make your blog better

If you want to know how to improve your blog, you must first decide on what your definition of improvement is. For the sake of this article, let's say that improvement is creating great content that people want to read, then driving traffic to your site. After all, what is the sense of creating good content if nobody ever sees it?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you think about all the different ways of how to improve your blog, the first thing that should leap to your mind is, of course, great content. No matter how much advertising, how many tricks, or how many thousands of people you get to look at your blog, if there is nothing of value there, they will fade away. Update your blog regularly, at least 4 to 5 times a week. Concentrate on providing information of value that is also entertaining to read.

  2. Step 2

As you write your great content, think about how to choose SEO (search engine optimization) words and phrases. However, do not get carried away with this. Think of how these words and phrases will flow naturally into the content of your blog. Be sure and try to weight these key words towards the beginning of your blog post. In addition, do not forget about using these keywords in your title and your alt tags.

  3. Step 3

Use a pinging service. This service automatically updates certain databases on the Internet. These databases are in turn searched by Google Yahoo etc., to direct those search engines to recently updated content. One of the most popular of these services is located at www.ping-o-matic.com. Some blogging software, such as WordPress, will automatically do this. Otherwise, simply go to the website and ping after each blog entry.

  4. Step 4

Network with your blog readers, and other bloggers. When someone comments on your blog be sure to reply to the comments when possible. This makes the reader feel like part of the process and helps to ensure a loyal readership. Also, comment on other blogs. This may give you link- backs or track-backs to you, and may lead to a regular link on someone else's blog. It may even lead to the other blogger directing traffic to your site in one of his posts. If you find a post in another blog that you think might be of interest to your readers be sure to link to it in one of your blog posts. This will be appreciated by the other blogger, and he may return the favor in kind.

  5. Step 5

Use social networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace to help advertise your blog. When you update your posts be sure to put a link to your new post on the home page of your social networking site. This same idea would apply to twitter. In addition, link to your social networking site on your blog, as this again will make the reader feel like part of the community.

  6. Step 6

If you write eHow articles, do not be afraid to use them to advertise your blog. If your article is relevant to your blogging or the subject of your blog, place a link to it in the resources section of your eHow article. You will notice that I have done this below.

  7. Step 7

There are a myriad of ways to improve your blog I have just scratched the surface here. I hope that this has given you some ideas. I will include in the resources section two blogs that might help you along these lines. I want to conclude with reiterating my first point. Do not go overboard with the technicalities of SEO or linking. Make it your top priority to create great content.
