You can use Kool-Aid to create a tie-dye effect.

If you're looking to create a tie-dye effect on a garment at home, consider using a packet of Kool-Aid. Kool-Aid has an acidic quality to it that makes it easy to use as a fabric dye, and you can use a technique of tying up the fabric to get the tie-dye pattern. Take care when using this method on garments made of natural fibers, like wool, as the Kool-Aid adheres best to these types of material.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a packet of Kool-Aid in the color you like into a large pot. Pour 1 cup of water over the Kool-Aid and mix them well.

    • 2

Bunch the garment you are dying into a cylindrical shape, twisting until you have a column of fabric. Tie three rubber bands around the column, equally spaced apart, securing it in the bunched-up position.

    • 3

Place the garment in the pot and pour just enough water into it to cover the garment.

    • 4

Heat the pot on a stove burner until the liquid begins to boil, then turn off the burner. Cover the pot and let it sit for abut 30 minutes.

    • 5

Remove the garment from the pot and take off the rubber bands. Wash the garment, either by hand or in a machine, and let it dry.
