Make a list of all the companies you call and write down the information they provide on your note pad for future reference. Make a column under the name of each rental company and fill in the information as you call. When finished, you'll have a one-page comparison chart. Make sure you get pricing information for the same size vehicle and additional equipment to have valid comparisons.

Ask and compare the daily rate on a truck for a local move in the same area. If you're moving to another city or out of state find out the fee for a one-way rental. If you are moving more than 50 miles, a one-way rental will probably be your cheaper option.

Ask about the mileage rate and how many miles are included as part of the rental fee. A company that charges $30 for the daily rental of a truck, but includes 50 miles as part of that fee will be a better deal than a company that charges $20 per day for the same size truck and 50 cents per mile (in the latter example, your total cost would be $45 if you drive 50 miles).

If you need additional equipment, like a hand truck or dolly to move heavy furniture and appliances, get the price of that rental to add to your final total for each company. Don't forget to ask about the fee for moving pads.

Ask about the drop-off policy when you are finished using the truck. Can you park the truck on the company's property and leave the keys or must you return the vehicle during business hours?

Decide if you need to buy additional insurance from the rental company and find out the cost. Carefully evaluate what is covered under the extra policy. For example, rooftop damage, such as caused by banging the truck into a low bridge, is typically not covered by the extra insurance. If you are inexperienced with driving a large vehicle and just want peace of mind, the insurance add-on may be a good value. Otherwise, your existing auto insurance policy may provide adequate coverage. Call your insurance carrier to be sure.

Rental trucks typically must be returned with a full tank of fuel. Check gas prices around your new location after the move to save money fill-up.
Be careful to note and write down any existing damage to a truck before you rent and drive it away. Likewise, make sure the odometer (mileage) reading is written down accurately on your rental contract and that the amount of fuel in the vehicle is accurate as noted by the rental representative.
