If you can help your roses make it through a hot summer then you will have a great fall blooming season on many types of roses.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

During the hot summer only do light pruning on your roses. Learn how to prune correctly.

  2. Step 2

To help roses make it through the worst of heat you can add fertilizer after pruning. Add a good rose fertilizer such as 15-5-10. Always follow instructions on the fertilizer label.

  3. Step 3

You may still have problems with disease like black spot no matter how well you take care of your roses. If you do see black spot then you can control it with a good fungicide. If you want to go organic then just mix up a light solution of baking soda and dish soap with a gallon of water and use this mixture now and then.

  4. Step 4

Be sure and water your roses well during summer to prevent any kind of stress. Roses do go dormant or semi dormant in summer but they still need water.

  5. Step 5

Add a good layer of mulch around your rose plants. Mulch helps keep the roots cool and conserves moisture as well. It also keeps the weeds down to keep you from working so hard in the heat.

Tips & Warnings
  • evaluate your roses every few months to see what they need
  • use sharp hand pruners and learn to prune correctly
  • wear gloves to prevent thorns from sticking you
