How to Reinstall Internet Explorer From a Windows XP Disk

If Internet Explorer becomes corrupted or accidentally deleted, you can reinstall the software either online or from the Windows XP CD-ROM disc. Although online is a more convenient way to install the latest edition, installing from the CD-ROM is convenient for those people with slow Internet connections or with offline computers. Reinstalling Internet Explorer from a disc only takes a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM or DVD into your computer. If autorun starts the installation wizard, you can exit out of the window.

    • 2

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Run." Type "cmd" in the textbox and click "OK." This opens the command prompt.

    • 3

Type the following into the command prompt:
      rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 <CDROMDrive>:\windows\inf\ie.inf
Replace "<CDROMDRive>" with the drive letter of your CD or DVD drive. This starts the installation process for only Internet Explorer instead of going through a reinstall of Windows XP.

    • 4

Click "Next" at the welcome screen for the installation. Select "I agree" at the licensing agreement and click "Next."

    • 5

Select a directory for the saved files and select "Next." Internet Explorer installs on computer.

    • 6

Reboot the computer. Internet Explorer makes changes to system files, so the computer needs to reboot for changes to take effect.
