How to Tighten Neck Skin

Tighten Skin on Your Neck

As men and women age, their skin can droop around the face, especially in the neck area. For only slightly loose neck skin, a small tightening can be achieved at home by exfoliating the skin. Otherwise, a surgical procedure offered by cosmetic surgeons will remove skin in the neck area in order for the remaining skin to be stretched tighter. As any surgical procedure, facelifts and neck lifts can be expensive, so you should try at-home remedies before making a doctor's appointment. Does this Spark an idea?

Cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin in order to prepare it for exfoliation. This is an important step that will prevent skin from becoming dry or flaky during the exfoliation process. Twice a day, wash your face with an oil-free cleanser; then dab an alcohol-free toner on your face and neck with your fingertips. Using your fingers, rub a small amount of oil-free moisturizer on your face once the toner has dried.

Scrub an exfoliant on your face, neck and chest three times a week. Using your fingertips, gently rub the exfoliant on your skin for two to three minutes. You can purchase an exfoliant, like Sephora, at your local drugstore or makeup store. You can also make an exfoliant at home using one part coarse kosher salt and one part tea tree oil. Place the mixture in an airtight container and use a palmful on your skin three times a week.

Make an appointment with a surgeon. If you are still suffering from neck-drooping problems, a cosmetic surgeon can give you a consultation to determine whether or not you would get results from a neck lift or facelift.

Get a second opinion. Some cosmetic surgeons are quick to recommend surgery, while others are not. Getting an opinion from another doctor that you may like better may change how you feel about the surgery. Although most doctors may offer a similar price for the surgery, some may offer a payment plan, if you can't afford it.

Have the neck lift or facelift procedure. Recovery from a neck lift or facelift can take several weeks, and you will have to wear a compression collar around your neck for several days after the operation to promote healing. A neck lift or facelift surgery usually only lasts about 10 years, after which you either will lose the effects of the surgery or have to have the procedure redone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Determine whether you would be willing to get a neck lift or facelift every 10 years to maintain it before getting the surgery for the first time.

  • If you experience swelling in the face, mouth or neck after using an exfoliant, you may be allergic to one of the ingredients in it--stop using it immediately and consult your doctor.
