Things You'll Need:
- Ruby Spice Summersweet shrub
- Organic compost or manure
- Shovel
- Hose
- Mulch
-
Step 1
Purchase ruby spice shrub in early spring. Select a shrub with a quality root ball. If the roots are growing out of the container then this is the sign of a strong root ball. The ruby spice summersweet grows in zone 3-9.
-
Step 2
Select a planting site that has adequate room, when full grown the ruby spice shrub is five feet in height and five feet wide.
-
Step 3
Display this shrub as a foundation plant. It is ideal when planted close to your front door. The late summer fragrant flower will linger in the air. The scent is a nice welcome for guests visiting your home.
-
Step 4
Ruby Spice shrubPlant your shrub in moist, slightly acidic sandy soil. This shrub grows best in an area that has sun and partial shade.
-
Step 5
Dig a hole the same depth of the nursery container. Allow two feet in width. Loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole. Mix organic compost or manure with the soil.
-
Step 6
Place the root ball in the middle of the hole. Hold the shrub with one hand and fill the hole half way full with water. Add soil to the hole and fill to two inches above the root ball.
-
Step 7
Apply three inches of mulch around the shrub. The mulch will help retain moisture and will prevent weed build up.

on 8/10/2009 e-rambler I am in my bedroom and the window is open a crack and that is enough to fill the room with the fragrance from the ruby spice. My entire back yard is heavenly scented. One thing you should know is that not everyone carries this shrub. I looked for it everywhere, I found it online at greenwood nursery, the owner of the nursery is Cheryl and if you don't see it in her list of products send her an email and she will order it for you.
