How to Tie a Hook to a Fishing Line

This article describes tying a fish hook to a line using the overhead clinch knot. This is one of the easiest, strongest and most commonly used knots in the sport.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing hook
  • Fishing line
  1. Step 1

    Pass the line through the eye of the hook.

  2. Step 2

    Hold the main line in your non-dominant hand (left if right handed, right if left handed) and hold the hook between your little finger and palm of your dominant hand. Grasp the free end of the line between your thumb and index finger and twist it around the main line five times.

  3. Step 3

    Bring the free end of the line back to the hook eye and pass it through the space created by the two parts of line emerging from the eye. Then pass it through the loop created by the free line.

  4. Step 4

    Wet the line with saliva as a lubricant. Then while holding the mainline and free line, pull the hook until the knot slides tight against the eye. Trim the free line left about 1 mm from the knot,
