A slow cooking method of preparing ribs can ensure that they come out perfect every time. Slow cooking ribs is not a difficult cooking method, and the reward that you reap when you bite into those tender, juicy ribs, that literally fall off of the bone as you sink your teeth into them, is well worth the effort. Things You'll Need

  • 1 rack of baby back ribs
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 tsp. liquid smoke
  • 4 carrots cut into bite-size pieces
  • 2 medium white potatoes peeled and diced
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 1 apple peeled and diced

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove the skin from a rack of ribs and trim off excess fat. Slice them into two to three rib sections.

      Place meat into a broiler about 6 inches beneath the flame and broil for 10 to 15 minutes on each side until slightly browned.

      In a small bowl, add the barbecue sauce and liquid smoke. Stir well.

      Using a crock pot, line the bottom with bite-size carrots, apples, potatoes and onions. On top of the vegetables, place one layer of ribs with the meaty side facing up. Pour some of the mixed barbecue and liquid smoke sauce on top of the ribs to coat them and use a brush to coat the meat evenly.

      Add another layer of ribs on top of the sauce coated first layer of meat and, again, use a brush to spread it evenly over the meat. Repeat this process until all of the ribs are stacked on top of each other in layers, coated evenly with the sauce.

      Cover the pot and cook on low or around 200 degrees Fahrenheit for six to seven hours. Be sure to leave the lid on the entire time so as not to allow any of the heat to escape.

      After six hours, check to see if the ribs are as well done as you desire. If not, allow to cook an additional hour. The sauce will have thinned out during the cooking process due to the juices from the meat. Do not do anything to thicken the sauce, as it will still have a rich flavor.

      Serve hot with vegetables from the bottom of the pot on the side.

Tips & Warnings

  • Resist the temptation to place the meat at the bottom of the crock pot, as it will get overly mushy.

  • Do not open the lid during the cooking process, as it slows down the cooking of the meat by about 20 minutes each time you lift the lid.
