How to Crochet a Ski Hat
Ski hats come in all sizes and patterns. You can crochet them easily for all of the members of your family with a few simple stitches and some leftover yarn from your stash. Just choose your pattern, stitch style and colors, and you're ready to go.
Things You'll Need
- Yarn, approximately one skein per hat
- Hook, sized to match your yarn
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends

1
Choose your hat style. You can crochet a ski hat in a traditional style, a brimmed style, a lacy style or a crazy style. Decide what kind of hat you want to make based on who will be wearing it and what he will use it for. Then decide what type of yarn to use (cozy fibers such as wool or acrylic work best, in a worsted weight or DK weight) and what color or color combination you would like to incorporate. Check the yarn label for the correct hook size to work with your yarn, and you're ready to go.

Choose a stitch pattern. If your hat recipient is actually going to wear the hat to go skiing, you will want to choose a tight crochet stitch to make sure the hat is cozy and warm. Try a single crochet or half double crochet stitch, or a modified version of those (such as herringbone hdc or front post sc). If the hat is for fashion only, you could use a lacier stitch pattern such as a shell stitch or v-stitch.

Begin your hat. Ski hats work best crocheted in the round. Start by crocheting a circle out of your preferred stitch pattern; when you have increased the circle to your desired hat size, simply crochet straight around until it reaches the length you desire. You can switch out your yarns to make a striped style or leave it solid. You can keep going until it is long enough to have a rolled brim or stop when it is long enough to cover the ears.

Finish your hat by weaving in your ends using your yarn needle and trimming the woven end with scissors. When your hat base is finished, you may want to embellish it. Add a pompom to the top by wrapping yarn around your index and middle fingers several times. Tie another length of yarn through the loop you have made, and knot it. Now cut one end of the loops and trim into a pompom shape. Leave the tied piece to attach the pompom to the top of your hat.
You can also add a flower embellishment on the side for a feminine touch or add buttons around the brim for interest and texture.

Tips & Warnings
You can use one pattern for a variety of hats, just by changing the hook size or the circumference of your starting circle.
Try to measure the person's head in advance, or try the hat on as you crochet, to make sure it isn't too big or too small.
