Things You'll Need:
- Napkins
- Knife or silverware
- Cold running water
- Liquid soap or detergent
- Vinegar
- Lemon juice
- Peroxide
- Bleach
- Laundry stain spray or stick
-
Step 1
Wipe or scrape off excess ketchup as carefully as you can so you don't push more ketchup into the fabric. Use a piece of silverware, such as a table knife, or a napkin.
-
Step 2
Remove the article of clothing and run cold water through the stain from the back side to force the ketchup back out of the item. If you are out and need to wear the item again, try to keep the rest of the garment dry.
-
Step 3
Rub some liquid soap or detergent gently into the stain.
-
Step 4
Soak the item in cool water for at least 10 minutes. If you are out, rinse the stained area and put garment back on, then soak it when you get home.
-
Step 5
Rinse garment and check your progress. If stain remains, repeat steps 3 through 5. After applying more detergent, rub the stained area against itself to encourage penetration of the soap.
-
Step 6
Apply vinegar, lemon juice or peroxide to stubborn stains. It is important to test for colorfastness in a hidden area first. If the garment is white, chlorine bleach may be used. Rinse again.
-
Step 7
Use a stain stick or spray on any remaining stain, wait 5 minutes, then launder as usual, and air-dry.
-
Step 8
Check the stain after the garment is dry. Repeat step 6 or 7 until stain is gone.
