How to Change Dual Boot Sequence for Ubuntu

Trying out the waters with Ubuntu, but not fully committed yet? Makes sense; switching operating systems can be a big adjustment. Happily, Ubuntu gives you the option to keep your Windows operating system around. One annoyance for those just trying out Ubuntu, though: it boots into Ubuntu by default. Want to boot into Windows by default, so you can press the power button and have it start up? No problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the terminal: click "Applications," then "Accessories," then "Terminal."

    • 2

Install Startup Manager by typing "sudo apt-get install startupmanager" and hitting Enter.
Alternatively, if you want to avoid the terminal, open Synaptic and install the package "startupmanager" by searching for it, right-clicking it and hitting "Install," followed by clicking "Apply all operations" on the toolbar.

    • 3

Start the Startup Manager. Click "System," then "Administration," then "StartUp-Manager." Type your password when prompted.

    • 4
Changing the default operating system is easy with StartUp-Manager.

Change your default OS to Windows using the drop-down menu (see picture). Easy enough, right? Click close, and next time you reboot, Windows will be the default.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful with Startup Manager; changing settings you don't understand could make your system unbootable.
