Step 1
Decide which diameter size ceiling fan you want. For a standard bedroom or medium sized living room, I suggest getting a fan with a diameter around 52". For a smaller room, you can use a smaller fan and a larger room can use a larger fan or multiple fans.
-
Step 2
Check the high speed airflow on the fan's specifications. Not all fans put out the same amount of air.
-
Step 3
Are you going to use the fan inside or outside? If you are using it inside, you can use inside or outside fans. If you are using it outside, you must have one that is rated for outside.
-
Step 4
Decide if you want a light kit. If you want a light kit, do you want the light bulbs exposed or covered? Does the fan come with light bulbs or will you need to purchase them separate?
-
Step 5
If you have an 8' or less ceiling height, you will probably want a ceiling fan with a really short stem or one that is called a ceiling hugger without a stem at all. If you have a taller ceiling, you will want a fan with a longer stem to get the ceiling fan closer to 8' from the floor.
-
Step 6
What ceiling fan finish do you want? You will need to decide on a metal color and/or blade color.
-
Step 7
Do you want any accessories? Remote controls are a popular option as well as designer pull chains.
-
Step 8
Look online for fans before going to the store. Many stores allow customers to leave comments about the fans that they have purchased. By reading the comments, you can learn if the customers loved or hated the fan you are interested in purchasing. You might even find an online special that is cheaper than the store price.
